Lupercalia, despite its popularity, survived until the end of the 5th century, when in 496 Pope Gelasius I abolished it, introducing in its place the feast of the nearest martyr in the liturgical calendar – St. Valentine.
Saint Valentine, who lived in the 3rd century, was the bishop of Terni, near Rome. He died a martyr’s death during the persecution of Christians. According to legend, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II Gothicus, who forbade young men to marry, Valentine opposed this ban, secretly marrying loving couples. When his secret was discovered, it led to his capture and death. It is also said that Valentine fell in love with his jailer’s blind daughter, who regained her sight thanks to his love. On the eve of his execution, Valentine wrote her a letter, signing it “From Your Valentine.”
